FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About High Cholesterol Treatment

High cholesterol usually does not cause noticeable symptoms. Many people first learn that their cholesterol is elevated after a lipid panel.

Not always. Fasting or nonfasting testing may be appropriate depending on your triglyceride level, previous results, the specific test, and the clinical question.

Not automatically. Treatment decisions consider your complete cardiovascular risk, health history, expected benefit, possible side effects, and preferences.

ApoB and lipoprotein(a) can provide additional cardiovascular risk information in selected patients. They are not required for everyone.

Schedule a medication review rather than stopping prescribed treatment without guidance. The clinician can assess symptoms, interactions, dose, and alternatives.

The interval is individualized. Testing may commonly be repeated around three months after starting or changing medication, or on another schedule chosen by the clinician.
